"Freedom or Survival" Blog [08/29/08

1.) Which is more important - freedom or survival?

“Freedom”- last words of William Wallace

Freedom is more important than survival, if you have noting to live for than it is not worth living. Of the things that people gives for freedom is one that is most honorable of all it is the one, which our county stands for. Thousands of people have died so that I can post things like this blog on a neutral net. Freedom is something that we Americans take for granted. But it is still to be protected over all else.  Some people may say that you can’t even enjoy the freedom if you are not around because you died fighting for it, to this I say that if I died for that freedom I might not have freedom but my posterity might live to have freedom. For instance, what would have happened if minutemen never made a stand at the Lexington Battle Green? What would have happened If Lincoln decided to maintain the union and his reputation instead of freeing the slaves? In this case Lincoln is fighting not for his freedom but for that of others, and as a result of this move is killed. Martian Luther King and Mahatma Gandhi also free peoples plight and suffer the same plight. Survival is a benefit but not a priority. People may think that this is about honor or glory, but the thing that it is about is freedom. People want to make choices and live the life they love. I’m not saying that people should be martyrs for their freedom I’m saying that people should realize that this is worth dying for.  People should also realize that the freedom of others is worth dying for.  If in WWII America saw what was happening in Nazi Germany and the president said, “eehh, not my problem” millions more people would have died before it became “our problem”. What was going on in Europe became our problem on December 7th 1941. That is what happens when we chose survival instead of freedom. If you don’t have freedom you don’t choose, I might not be as bad as the ghetto of Nazi Germany, but it will never be as good as freedom. We may never have the whole world, free but we can at least try. Freedom is about hope and how you can do what before you had only been able to hope for. I think that all humans yearn to have freedom to do things, freedom to drive, freedom to love, and freedom to live.  Sometimes people must survive to be free but people should never run away from something that threatens their freedom.  Those are the reasons why freedom is more important than survival.

“Those who would choose would safety over freedom deserve nether freedom nor safety” – Benjamin Franklin

I really like this quote:

"Of the things that people gives for freedom is one that is most honorable of all it is the one, which our county stands for. Thousands of people have died so that I can post things like this blog on a neutral net."

At first I thought, "What the heck are you saying?" The Internet is not American, but then when you conisder that people in China are extremely limited in their internet usage and are controled about their freedom of speech, even online your quote really hits the spot. I really liked that. And I aslo like all your historic tie-ins, especially the William Wallace one, I learned something new today! ;)
