Today for my research I read through Indiana laws on archaeology. Almost all of the laws related to finding of burial sites and the artifacts associated with them. I also found some good evidence that supported my belief that laws allowing people to collect were positive for both archaeologist and collectors. The Central States Archaeological Society, (CSAS) showed that collectors generally are a positive influence on artifact collectors. The president of the CSAS actively urged members to responsible collect and to report the sites and the artifacts found in them to trained professionals. As a result it seems that there is quite a positive and tangible component to the effects of “finders keepers” I also looked up sever articles from discovery news and stories about finds made by amateurs. One of the more recent of these was the discovery of a gold stash in a field in England that was from the dark ages. One of the gold artifacts had a proverb written on it that was still eligible. The amateur did the right thing in this case also and told the authorities instead of hording it to himself.
