Subservience

  • Blog – Is subservience a necessary part of living?

Subservience is a necessary part of living, because we, as human beings, can’t always be in control. Submission is regrettably necessary because human are not born in equal positions of wealth and affluence. Thus the poor are, in a way born into their subservience. To have any hope of making out of subservience Richard Wright has to be subservient to gain wages that will be used to help him go north. For Richard subservience is a necessary part of living because if he were not subservient then the whites would have killed him making it defiantly a necessary part of living. However living in a state of subservience is not really living, and what whites in the book have tried to convince Richard is that this pale shadow of life is the natural order of things, Wright does not believe this, and as a result, he is not mentally subservient to the whims of white people. As a result he is never truly subservient because he is only subservient as a guise for his ambitions so that he will not die. As a result while subservience is necessary, resistance to it is essential for not having one’s spirit crushed.
