Blog – Explain the differences between implicit and explicit arguments. Use the picture and poem on p. 5-6 to support you.
Explicit arguments are the formal type of sitting at the podium or writing a letter of complaint type of arguments. These arguments appeal to people’s logic, usually citing several other people’s arguments on the topic, or facts. They are usually structured with a main argument and supporting facts to prove it. On the other hand implicit arguments express their stand by using mediums such as photographs, paintings, poems, or songs to get their point across, the examples in the book Writing Arguments show two powerful examples of the same argument, both using implicit arguments. Implicit arguments are therefore appealing to people’s emotions more than their logic (thought most of them still use logic in their arguments). Both of these arguments are effective tools in changing people’s minds appealing to both of the major parts that humans usually factor into their decision making.
