Blog – How does Linda finally attain her freedom? Why does she have mixed emotions about this at the end of the book?
Linda finally attains her freedom when Mrs. Bruce buys her freedom from the Dodges. Despite that it could be argued that she was already free when she ran away from the Flints in the first place. Linda felt that she had been free before her freedom was bought. Linda has mixed emotions because she was shown great kindness by Mrs. Bruce. At the same time felt troubled because she perceived herself as already being free, yet she was being purchased to freedom. Because Mrs. Bruce was buying her freedom she was also giving money to people whom she felt had no right to her. To top of this blend of conflicting emotions she has the relief of knowing that people can no longer hunt her like a dog, and that in every way she is free from the bondage which for so long has made her suffer through her life.

I hadn't thought that maybe Linda considered herself to already be free. Excellent point. Perhaps she was mad that she was being purchased again, even though it was for her freedom. In addition, you brough up another great point - Mrs. Bruce essentially gave money to the people she hated the most. It wasn't as much of a victory for Linda as it was a mutual agreement that benefited both sides - Linda got her freedom and the slave owners got money. Great blog Chris!
