- Blog – Pick a passage in which Jacobs is using her own honesty to establish her credibility. Explain how and why she is doing it.
When Mrs. Flint is worried that Mr. Flint is trying to have an affair with Linda. Mrs. Flint asks Linda if this is true promising to protect her from Mr. Flint if it is. Linda knew full well that the consequences of a truthful answer would probably lead to misplaced hatred from Mrs. Flint and outrage from Mr. Flint, who is constantly trying to teach her that his truth is the only truth and that any advances by him were her fault alone. Mr. Flint also has in his power the ability to make her life miserable through torture, sale of her kids, beatings, shame, and death. Despite Mrs. Flint promises there is very little that she can do to protect her, not to mention that may slave masters promises turn out to be hollow. Despite this Linda tells the truth, swearing on a Bible to add to her credibility, which would have made her much more believable to the highly religious audience reading. Linda’s truthfulness even in the face of adversity attests to her credibility and character.
