Blog – Why is it important that this book is truth, not fiction? Why is it important that the editor didn’t clean it up, either in terms of language or content?
It is crucial to the meaning of this book that the information be true and uncensored. The point of this book is to tell a true story of a slave girl in the south and all the horrors of everyday life with it. It shows without trying to make better the dehumanizing effects of slavery and the cruelty and immorality that went with it. If it were not true people could easily dismiss it as being a worst case scenario, or a piece of abolitionist propaganda. The fact that the truth is as bad as it is serves the abolitionists, helping them gain followers and calling their members to action. Which is of course why this story helps to get people to work towards the slaves obtaining freedom. If nothing else a true story written by a black girl shows that they are not lesser beings than the white men who tell them that they are inferior.
