destruction of archaeological sites

Blog 12/7/09

Today I researched destruction of archaeological sites, because I am from Indiana and it is the area I am familiar with decided to check out and see how many of it’s sites were destroyed by looting and other forms of improper collecting vs. sites being destroyed by other means. I have found out that there are whopping 47,000 archaeological sites in Indiana. Proper collecting will not destroy, and has not destroyed any of these. Digging has destroyed or damaged many sites both from looting and construction. Looting however tends to destroy much larger sites in search of artifacts. Because construction workers are not intentionally digging into areas with high concentrations of artifacts, and would be required by the state to hire an archaeological service to excavate or survey before they could work modern construction usually does not destroy much. Looting also violates property rights and is the archaeological equivalent to poaching.

Chris,

Your topic is definitely a good one for you. It was interesting for me to read that there were 47,000 sites in Indiana. I never would have expected such high numbers! Your paper may be a little difficult since you most likely already have strong feelings about archaeology. Make sure that you don't inject your opinions too much.
Good luck on your paper.
