Black Boy, Chapter 3 Paralysis

  • Blog – Explain Wright’s response to his mother’s paralysis.

Wrights response to his mother’s paralysis is a sudden realization that he is no longer a kid. He realizes he must fend for himself and take on responsibilities that are above his age, ones that he is not fully prepared to deal with. This fills Richard with fear for his future, which was never even certain to begin with. He dreads what appears to be his mom’s inevitable death. His response to write to his grandmother and his aunts and uncles is a mature one, because while he dislikes his grandmother, she was probably the only one who was in a position of affluence that would have been able to pay for his mother’s medical bills. The foremost part of his mother’s paralysis is even if she has not died Richard lost another figure in his life that provided for him (his dad was the first one) and more importantly cared for him.
