- Blog – What is Gitlin saying about the streams of rhetoric that pour out of America? Do you agree with him?
Gitlin is saying that the streams of advertising that pour out of America are offering false promises with how they portray themselves. Ads in America offer that their products are the funnest thing you can do with your pants on but really are exaggerating and leading people into disappointment, to make money. America sells fun; it exports movies, TV, and products that are trendy. Disney has used the world’s consumption to build itself an empire and has increased it’s supply of these over the demand for them. I disagree with Gitlin’s point, that we are forcefully dispensing American media around the globe. While all things American are cool to the world for the sole reason that they are American, I do not think that we are forcing our coolness down their throats. I do however agree that American culture has become recognizable to the world from music to movies and models.
