Man does not live on bread alone

Blog – Why is Wright really hungry?

Wright is really hungry because of the condition of his life he lives in a state of starvation and poverty, physically, Mentally, and Morally. He is beaten badly, his father walks out, his mother leaves him in an orphanage, he becomes an alcoholic and has to fend for himself by the early age of six. While he is starving, it is not just for physical nourishment, he is starving for human contact and justice as well. He notes that he was unaware of the racial differences till people pointed them out, he fears whites as a result, but is not sure why, to him they are still just people. Even though the book says he eats, he is still hungry because “man does not live on bread alone” his hunger cannot cease until he find out what he is truly hungry for and obtains it.
