Malcolm X

  • Blog – Engaging the Text #2 on p. 218 BUT think also of Richard. What ‘knowledge’ has he been ‘educated’ by that spurred him on to ‘freedom’?

The knowledge that Malcolm gained spurred him on to freedom by giving him knowledge so that while he was in a cell his mind was the freest he had ever been. Because of his reading he found group of people to blame for all the bad things in the world, and a cause to rally behind. I thought is was sadly ironic that by making stereotypes of whites as all bad he was subscribing to the same philosophy as those who he was blaming. That aside, he was free to think, and no matter what situation his body was in, his mind could never be thrown in a cell with the knowledge that he learned. Because he learned so much while in prison in many ways it was one of the best things that could have happened for him because he formed his views on the world and had time to educate himself far beyond his formal schooling.
