sexualization of the media

2. Why is it dangerous to depict women and men as sex objects, according to Kilbourne? Why is the objectification of women more troubling in her view? Do you agree?

It is dangerous to depict people in ads as objects because people will start viewing the opposite gender as a object outside of ads. This makes people not empathize or view the other gender as an equal, this often leads to rape and assault because it is far easier to abuse something which is not human than someone that is. The objectification is more troubling in her view because society views women as partly responsible if they get raped. This makes it seem like rape less men’s fault. In addition, more women are raped and abused than men. I agree with her view, sexualization of the media has made pornographic images of the opposite gender pervasive in all aspects of American culture thus allowing objectification to become more permissible. Because of the all-encompassing aspect of media in American society it is hard to take a step without running into some sexual reference or inference that objectifies women.

I agree with your stance about sexualization in the media. And I really liked what you added at the end: that it is very difficult to avoid these situations. So then what do we do about them? Overall, good blog with a realistic approach. 5
