politicians and artists

  • Blog – Do you agree with Wright’s theory that artists and politicians stand at opposite poles?

I believe that in many ways Richard is right about how politicians and artist’s stand at opposite send of the spectrum. Artists on one hand are idealists, while politicians are realists, since they need to gain public approval to get votes and to do so requires compromise. However unlike Richard, I do not think that this is always true, there have been many artists who have a political message that they have used art to convey, thus making them politicians (Diego Rivera is a good example of this because his murals have a very communist political bias). While artists and politicians are usually at opposite ends of the spectrum it is not always this way because there are artists who are realists (not the artistic movement, the political outlook), and politicians who are idealists. Despite this, I think that the majority of the time Richard is right in his assertion that artists and politicians are at the opposite end of the spectrum.

Aside from the few grammatical errors, I found the blog to be fairly interesting, though I disagree with what you are saying. I think that Wright viewed artists as polar opposites to politicians because he had politicians standing in his way. I don't think they are working towards different goals, but rather their way of getting to that goal is different, as with his Communist party. Also, the simplification of artists to idealists and politicians to realists seemed like a gross oversimplification to me, though you did allow for discrepancies in the idea. The majority of artists have a political message behind their art, and especially the group known as "realists" work to portray the everyday and often brutal struggles of common people. Politicians can also be idealists, which is what a majority of them are I believe, because they often promote their ideas and make promises they fail to convey (as many of the promises Pelosi and Obama have made- GITMO and Healthcare still haven't come to pass).
